The museum was opened on September 9, 1968, on the twenty-ninth anniversary of the poet's death,
For almost thirty years, it was housed in a historic, former monastery building at Narutowicza 10. In 1999, it lost its previous location, and after three years of operating in a temporary location at the Wincenty Pol Manor and simultaneously renovating a new building, it inaugurated its activities on September 9, 2002, in a townhouse at Złota 3, which was donated to the city for cultural purposes by the prominent Riabinin family.
